Getting Ready to Fall Back

Seven Seasonal Chores

  1. Replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
  2. Reverse the direction of any ceiling fans. In the fall, fan blades should rotate clockwise to help warm up rooms.
  3. Arrange for fireplaces to be inspected and clean them up for the winter season.
  4. Schedule a furnace or heating duct inspection. Change all filters.
  5. Drain the water heater. Experts recommend draining one quart of water each quarter. Check the owner's manual for procedures for your water heater model.
  6. Go through the medicine cabinet and dispose of expired items.
  7. Begin the seasonal wardrobe rotation, taking time to inspect and throw out damaged items or donate unused or ill-fitting items.
