As Public Benefits Specialist, Joshua guides clients through every step of the Medicaid application and appeal process. Much of his work is on the financial portion of Medicaid cases where he helps families understand the process and meet spend-down deadlines.

Before joining Johnson McGinnis Elder Care Law, Joshua spent several years working for Tennessee public benefits agencies, experience that makes him a valuable addition to the Johnson McGinnis team. He spent more than a year working as an eligibility counselor for the Tennessee Department of Human Services where he evaluated applicants for Medicaid, Families First and the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and worked to help claimants find jobs in order to transition off of public benefits. While working as a disability claims examiner for the Tennessee Department of Disability Determination Services, he used medical, psychiatric, vocational, and educational data to determine claimants’ medical eligibility for Social Security Disability, Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid benefits. He also served as a managed care specialist for the Bureau of TennCare where he determined financial and technical eligibility for nursing home Medicaid benefits.

Though Joshua found his work with Medicaid cases deeply gratifying, he found it difficult to imagine a career as a state employee so when he learned about the opening at Johnson McGinnis, he jumped at the chance. “I really enjoy helping people and wanted to stay in this field,” says Joshua. “Working on Medicaid cases at Johnson McGinnis makes it possible for me to continue doing something I love in an environment where everyone has a passion for the work they do.”

Joshua earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Human Performance from University of Tennessee at Martin. After graduation, he worked briefly as a personal trainer and teacher’s assistant before beginning his career in public benefits.

When he’s not working with Johnson McGinnis clients, Joshua enjoys spending time with his wife, Deshawnda, and his infant daughter, Aaliyah.
