Mom needed care. I needed help.

When my mom went into rehab after having a stroke, I was told that I should see an elder care lawyer to protect Mom’s assets if she had to go into the nursing home. Everyone recommended Takacs McGinnis.

My mom lives with my sister just a few minutes away from me. My sister works during the day, so I stay with Mom then, and we have two brothers nearby who also help. Mom had been having some memory problems, and we learned after the stroke that she has vascular dementia.

We came to Takacs McGinnis because I was having to pay for Mom’s care at home and it had become too expensive. We wanted to get care at home because Mom doesn’t yet need nursing home care. Takacs McGinnis helped get us on into TennCare. I tried to apply myself and had been denied. If we hadn’t worked with Takacs McGinnis, I don't know that we would have gotten qualified for TennCare because I probably didn't know the right things to say and the right way to approach that.

One of the best parts about working with Takacs McGinnis was something I didn’t expect. I knew that they could help me get Mom on TennCare, but I didn’t realize that they had elder care coordinators like Debra King who could guide you through the long-term care process. It has been a great help to be able to have someone to be able to pick up the phone and call and say, "I need help with this."

When I came out of my first meeting with Takacs McGinnis, I was so relieved. It's a great feeling knowing that there’s a way to pay for the care Mom needs at home. It’s even better knowing that there’s’ somebody who can guide me. After we got the Life Care Plan for Mom, Debra did a home assessment that gave her a better insight into Mom’s situation, and what we should do next.

I know that everybody has their area of expertise, just like doctors. It’s the same with lawyers. It wasn't a matter of just going to any lawyer because we already had a Power of Attorney in place. But a Power of Attorney isn’t the same as an elder care plan.

There aren’t many elder law attorneys in my area, but everyone I know who has used Takacs McGinnis has had good things to say about them.

Getting a Life Care Plan for Mom involved an upfront expense, but that expense was nothing when you think about what I would have spent if I had to pay for Mom’s care out of pocket. I paid a flat fee, so I never have to worry about being charged extra for calling them. The way I see it, that money was going to be spent some way or another. And at least now it's being spent on people who can guide me through the process. I don’t have to navigate these uncharted waters alone.
